Richard R. "Dick" Merritt, 86, of Cedar Rapids, died Tuesday, April 12, 2016, at West Ridge Care Center. Private graveside service Friday at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include two sons, Rob (Pat) of Lisbon and Rick (Barb) of Cedar Rapids; and a sister, Marilyn Eilers of Lincoln, Neb. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Michelle (Zeb) Zaruba, Stacy Collins (Dave), Ryan Merritt and Derek Merritt; a stepgrandchild, Amanda Kubik; and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife and two brothers, Bob and Jack.
Dick was born May 21, 1929, in Scotts Bluff, Neb., the son of Lloyd and Alta Ray Merritt. He married Betty L. Beck on June 11, 1950, in Omaha, Neb. Betty passed away in 2011.
Dick graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1956. He was a highway engineer for the Iowa DOT for 35 years, retiring in 1991. Dick was a member of the Association of Asphalt Paving Technologists and proudly served in the Navy during the Korean War. He was an avid Nebraska Cornhusker fan and also followed the Iowa Hawkeyes. He enjoyed travel, reading and especially the time spent with friends and his beloved family. His memory will be cherished by all who knew and loved him.
