Clinton came to politics early, campaigning for Republican presidential candidate Barry Goldwater in 1964 before becoming a Democrat in 1968. She was a member of a president impeachment inquiry staff, which advised the House of Representatives Judiciary Committee during the Watergate scandal.
She was the first lady of Arkansas during her husband's tenure as governor and then the country's first lady after her husband was elected president in 1992. At his request, she was appointed by her husband to head up a task force on health reform, and became a lightning rod for criticism for a proposal that ultimately failed.
As her husband's second term drew to a close, Clinton decided to run for the U.S. Senate, representing New York. She was re-elected to the Senate in 2006, and then sought the Democratic nomination for president in 2008. Clinton ultimately lost that quest to Barack Obama, who then appointed her secretary of state. She stepped down from that position in 2013, and was widely expected to again run for president. She declared her candidacy in April 2015.
Clinton and her husband, Bill, met in law school at Yale and married in 1975. They have one daughter, Chelsea, and one grandchild. They are awaiting the birth of their second grandchild.
