CEDAR RAPIDS - Grins spread across the faces of Iowa City West's tennis coaches Friday.
And why not? Their players were dominant.
The Trojans advanced two doubles teams to the semifinal round of the Class 2A state tournament, and West's only individual competitor advanced to the quarterfinals of the singles tournament until being defeated.
“It just proves to show the overall talent we have here,” sophomore Karl Wenzel said.
On the doubles side, Kyle Appel and Adam Dellos breezed through the first two rounds. They will play the Ames team of Alex Qin and Tommy Pitcher at 10 a.m. today at Veterans Memorial Tennis Center. Appel and Dellos seeded fourth in the tournament.
The surprise of the day, though, came at the hands of the other Trojan duo, Adam Boldt and Wenzel. The pair upset the tournament's No. 3 seed in Mitch Anderson and Clayton Hoyt of Cedar Rapids Washington.
“In this tournament, seedings really don't matter, and we just played with a lot of confidence,” Boldt said.
Boldt and Wenzel will take on yet another duo from Ames in Calvin Song and Victor Wang at 10 a.m.
In the singles tournament, Des Moines Roosevelt's Will Hemminger defeated the only Trojan competitor, Blake Oetting, in straight sets in the second round.
The only remaining area player in singles is Cedar Rapids Kennedy's Riley Galbraith. The Cougar senior finished fourth in 2011 at this tournament and said he had some unfinished business this weekend.
“I've been waiting all year to get back to this spot and now that I'm here it's time to change what happened last year,” Galbraith said.
Galbraith, seeded second, defeated Anders Jense of West Des Moines Valley, 6-1, 6-2, in the opening round, then took out Bobbie Slavens of Bettendorf, 6-2, 6-0. He'll face Hemminger in the semifinals.
Besides the Trojans and Galbraith, all other area players are in the consolation bracket. That includes the top-seeded doubles team, Tyler McCann and Brady Anderson of Linn-Mar, who were defeated in the quarterfinals by Qin and Pitcher.
Showers and the threat of more rain moved play indoors Friday. Singles matches were played at Coe's Clark Racquet Center, and doubles matches were contested at Westfield Tennis Center. Play went into the evening.
Championship semifinals are 10 a.m. today, consolation semifinals at 9:30 a.m.
Class 1A
In Class 1A at Waterloo, Cedar Rapids Xavier's Noah Schmall won his first-round match then lost to the No. 1 seed in the second round. He withdrew from a second-round consolation match.
