CEDAR RAPIDS - Veterans Memorial Tennis Center will be the center of attention for boys' tennis this weekend.
The Class 2A state singles and doubles competition begins Friday and Cedar Rapids and Iowa City are well-represented.
Riley Galbraith of Cedar Rapids Kennedy should be among the top seeds in singles when they are announced this morning and will be joined by Blake Oetting of Iowa City West. Both were district champions.
In doubles, Linn-Mar's Brady Anderson and Tyler McCann could earn a top seed and will be joined by teammates Trevor McCann and John Kuster. Kyle Appel and Adam Dellos of Iowa City West were district champs like Anderson and Tyler McCann and will be joined in the doubles field by teammates Adam Boldt and Karl Wenzel.
Two Washington teams - district champs Mitch Anderson and Clayton Hoyt and Mitch Blades and Reid Rossberger - also are in the doubles field.
“Brady and Tyler have had great seasons for us, though I don't think they are quite satisfied yet,” Linn-Mar Coach Chris Wundram said. “They have gone undefeated this season, and have answered every challenge they have had.
“They play very well off each other, which is very important in doubles play.”
Seedings will be announced today after an 8:30 a.m. coaches meeting. Wundram is confident his pair will fare well.
“They should be seeded number one or two,” he said. “With the season they have had, they deserve it.”
Linn-Mar and Iowa City also will play in the 2A team tournament, Tuesday in Des Moines.
“We are excited to be in the last four teams in the state,” Wundram said.
The Class 1A tournament is at Byrne's Park Tennis Complex in Waterloo. Cedar Rapids Xavier's Noah Schmall is a district champ and the only area singles qualifier. Decorah's Kai Brown and Lucas Hunter made the doubles field as district champs.
