William Thomas "Bill" Shively, 89, died Sunday, Oct. 5, 2014, at Rose Haven Nursing Home in Marengo. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 8, at Phillips Funeral Home in Keystone, with the Rev. Craig Steimel officiating. Interment will be at Keystone Cemetery, with graveside military rites by Merkel-Bockholt American Legion Post 107 of Keystone. Friends may call from 4 until 7 p.m., Tuesday at the funeral home.
Bill was born June 1, 1925, in Lebanon, Ky., to Robert and Hattie (Brown) Shively. He served his country in the Army during World War II. On Nov. 16, 1946, he was united in marriage to Virginia Walters in Campbellsville, Ky.
Bill farmed in the Keystone area, retiring in 1985. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Van Horne, the Keystone Turners and Merkel-Bockholt American Legion Post 107 in Keystone.
Bill loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and enjoyed helping others.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia; son, Jerry (Jo Ann) Shively of Urbandale; daughter, Peggy (Jack) Rabe of Blairstown; five grandchildren, Jeremy (Amanda) Shively of Davenport, Adam (Annie) Rabe of Marengo, Joseph Shively of Urbandale, Amelia (Jerimy) Eggert of Marengo and Jessica (Joshua) Shwery of Waukee; and nine great-grandchildren, Elizabeth, Imagin, Gavin, Aiden, Landon, Elijah, Alivia, Logan and Asher.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Janice Shively; his great-granddaughter, McKenzie Shwery; four brothers, Joe, Robert, Alex and Jim Shively; and three sisters, Florence Murphy, Helen Mattingly and Mabel Shively.
