Don was born Feb. 1, 1945, in Clinton, the son of Kenneth and Marian (Banthin-Hardersen) Berner. He attended Calamus schools until he joined the U.S. Army. During his service, he was critically injured while in Germany. Following his service, he moved to Cedar Rapids and graduated from Cedar Rapids Business College. Don was united in marriage to Martha "Marty" Jean Holmes on Aug. 22, 1970, at First Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids. He worked at Pennick and Ford, Nissen Corp. and Wausau Homes for over 10 years. Don and Marty purchased Midway Lanes in Mount Vernon on June 1, 1980. They renamed it Don Mar Lanes, where they owned and operated it until their son, Doug, purchased the business in August 2008. Don enjoyed bowling, boating, being outdoors in his timber or on the lawnmower and wintering in Florida and Texas following retirement. The time spent with his friends and family was cherished.
Don is survived by his wife, Marty; five children, Tammy (Brandon) Pitlik of Mount Vernon, Teresa (Luke) McDermott of Mission, Texas, Tosha (Daron) Rubner of Mount Vernon, Douglas (Sarah) Berner and Dustin Berner, both of Lisbon; and eight and a half grandchildren, Trenton and Braxton Pitlik, Chloe and Camille McDermott, Brianna, Mazie and Gabrielle Rubner and Dylan Berner.
