CEDAR RAPIDS – The Cedar Rapids RoughRiders made United States Hockey League history Friday night.
They became the first league team to have players taken in the first round of the National Hockey League Draft back-to-back years when Ivan Provorov went to the Philadelphia Flyers with the seventh-overall pick. That doesn't include the United States National Team Development Program.
The Tampa Bay Lightning chose defenseman Anthony DeAngelo in the first round of last year's draft. He also was a RoughRiders alum.
Provorov played the 2013-14 season in Cedar Rapids and was with the Brandon Wheat Kings of the major junior Western Hockey League this past season. He is from Russia.
The draft continues Saturday, with as many as five more RoughRiders or RoughRiders alumni expected to be selected.
