HIAWATHA - The Hawkeye Area Community Action Program was the recipient of an egg-celent donation on Friday.
In honor of Iowa Egg Month, declared as May by Gov. Terry Branstad, Fareway Stores Inc. donated 10,800 eggs to the agency in Hiawatha. The eggs are to be distributed to local families in need of food assistance, according to a news release.
'Fareway is proud to provide this donation to HACAP in Hiawatha,” said Reynolds Cramer, CEO of Fareway. 'We are excited to partner in helping provide a nutritious food option to those in need.”
HACAP provides a variety of anti-poverty programs, working with community partners in a six-county region.
Through the HACAP Food Reservoir program, food is distributed to more than 102 nonprofit agencies and anti-hunger programs are operated in seven counties.
'We greatly appreciate Fareway's generous donation of 12 pallets of eggs,” said Linda Gorkow, of HACAP Food Reservoir. 'Eggs are often a difficult food item to secure, and they are a highly sought-after part of a nutritious and economical diet.”
Iowa's egg farmers care for nearly 59 million laying hens that produce 16 billion eggs per year, according to the Iowa Egg Council.
