Aug. 12, 2015 9:06 pm
University of Iowa heavyweight Sam Stoll fell one win short of earning a bronze medal at the 2015 United World Wrestling Junior World Championships on Wednesday in Salvador, Brazil. Stoll, who is entering his second year with the Hawkeye wrestling program, finished 2-2 overall, reaching the semifinal round in the Greco-Roman division.
Stoll, who earned a bronze in the 2013 Junior World Championships, was the lone U.S. competitor to reach the medal round, tallying half the country's four overall wins throughout the two-day event. Stoll, of Kasson, Minn., opened with a pin over Egypt's Sayed Abdelatif. He added a 4-1 win against Germany's Jello Kramer.
Stoll lost in the semifinals to Georgia's Zviadi Pataridze, the 2014 Cadet World champion. The medal bid ended with a 5-1 loss to Turkey's Osman Yildirim.
Stoll went 18-5 in his red-shirt season. He claimed tournament titles at the Luther Open and Grand View Open, earning top four finishes at two other events.
Hawkeye Wrestling Club's Brent Metcalf and Tony Ramos will compete in the UWW Senior World Championships on Sept. 7-12 in Las Vegas. They will wrestle in the men's freestyle at 143 and 125.5 pounds, respectively.
