Crews will install another set of traffic cameras this week to watch northbound traffic on Interstate 380.
The cameras will monitor northbound traffic from a sign between the H Avenue and 29th Street interchanges. They are going up during the evening hours, when traffic isn't as heavy, police said.
Lt. Jeff Hembera said the new cameras should start catching speeders later this month. Before they go live, police will notify the public through the media.
Cameras installed at the Diagonal Drive interchange at the end of May have been busy, according to data obtained by The Gazette. More than 3,500 speeding tickets have been sent to motorists caught there, and another 2,000 motorists have been issued warnings.
Police have said the number of speeders is declining at that interchange, according to the most recent data.
Eventually, police plan to create the first automated speed zone in the country, using the two sets of cameras to time drivers. Essentially, if you get to the second set of cameras too fast, you could be cited for speeding.
But Hembera said that's down the line.
“I'm not sure if we're looking at a few months or a year for that,” Hembera said. “I'm not really sure of the time frame.”
More cameras will be installed later this year to monitor southbound traffic on I-380, police said.
Radar-enabled speed cameras are attached to a sign post as traffic moves along northbound Interstate 380 near the Diagonal Dr. SW exit on Friday, May 21, 2010, in Cedar Rapids. The cameras will record speeders and issue a ticket for the infraction. (Jim Slosiarek/SourceMedia Group News)
