The number of former Iowa State Cyclones coaching in the NBA has been cut in half.
The Phoenix Suns announced Monday Jeff Hornacek has been let go in the midst of a 14-35 season in which Phoenix has lost 19 of its last 21 games.
Yahoo Sports first reported the news early Monday morning.
Hornacek was in his third season with the Suns, leaving with a record of 101-112. Phoenix was 48-34 in 2013-14, when Hornacek was runner-up for the NBA's coach of the year award, and 39-43 last season. The team did not make the playoffs in either season.
Iowa State's career assists and steals leader, Hornacek played for the Cyclones from 1982-86. He then played 14 seasons in the NBA with Phoenix, Philadelphia and Utah.
Hornacek was a rumored candidate for the ISU coaching vacancy created by the Chicago Bulls' hiring of Fred Hoiberg last summer, but Hornacek's agent denied reports he had been contacted by the Cyclones.
