Lisbon holds 12-point lead in 1A state track team race with one day to go
May. 20, 2016 9:02 pm
DES MOINES — Lisbon put itself in exactly the position it wanted, but Thatcher Krob knew it was going to be a race against the clock.
When Krob took the baton in the Class 1A 1,600-medley relay, his challenge wasn't the rest of the field 15 meters behind him. It was much more internal than that.
'It was pretty hard not seeing anybody in front of you and just racing with your mind,' Krob said. 'You've just got to keep pushing yourself. We've been doing that a lot this year, but we went out and did good.'
Lisbon won its heat, but finished second in the medley in 3:38.16. Mount Ayr won out of the first of three heats in 3:36.01.
Junior Jack Butteris, who finished second in the open 400 Thursday, ran 49.06 in his 400-meter split to catapult Lisbon ahead in its heat. He said his performance as an individual proved useful during the squad race, especially since Lisbon ran from lane one at the start.
'Getting in lane one showed where everyone was at and I knew how fast I had to go to get to that cut line,' Butteris said. 'It was a big part of it.'
The eight points earned in the medley helped the Lions to lead the field in the team title race with 34 points through 10 events — a 12-point lead on second-place Jesup. The Lions have two runners in the open 800, the 200, 1,600 and 1,600-relay Saturday, attempting to secure a repeat as 1A team champions.
'We're just going to ask other people to step up and I'm confident that our team can do that,' Butteris said.
Jesup also snagged eight team points with a second-place finish in the 800-relay, finishing in 1:31.82. Lawton-Bronson had the edge for that title, running 1:31.38. Jesup entered the event with the third-fastest qualifying time.
'We just beat our personal record for the season running that, too,' said Jesup anchor Andrew Mattson. 'We came in and did better than we thought (we would), but it was a pretty good race.'
Lone Tree's Nike Gosnell was third in the high jump at 6 feet, 3 inches while Calamus-Wheatland junior Cole Moeller repeated as state champion, this time jumping 6 feet, 10 inches.
