TEAMS TO WATCH
C.R. Jefferson:
The J-Hawks experienced some growing pains a year ago, but return a large group of starters. Jefferson has some talented players in all-MVC performers Spencer VanScoyoc and Spencer Hunt. They need to add depth to their rotation, which could lead to big improvements from a 12-28 mark last year.
C.R. Kennedy:
It has become the standard of Metro programs behind recently inducted Hall of Fame head coach Bret Hoyer. Cougar seniors have grabbed the reins. Hoyer said Kennedy has experience, hoping players are smarter and wiser this year. Derek Jacobus and Zach Daniels are two of the top performers returning for Kennedy, which finished second in the Mississippi Valley Conference Mississippi Division with a 16-10 conference record and 22-19 overall.
C.R. Xavier:
The Saints ended last year ranked 10th at 25-16 and suffered a tough loss at the Class 4A state tournament to runner-up Sioux City East. The most intriguing aspect of the season is how long senior Mitch Keller spends with the team, considering his professional aspirations and commitment to North Carolina. The Saints pitching depth will get tested and they might have to rely on good speed and hitting.
Iowa City West: The Trojans have won three straight MVC division titles and should contend for another. Tyus Adkins was impressive on the mound for West last season, and Devin Raffensperger provided a punch at the plate. They have lost some talented seniors from last season, but should be another top team in the MVC.
Dyersville Beckman:
The Blazers have won two straight Class 2A state titles. They graduated a strong senior class last year, but 'next-man in” has carried their tradition. Mitch Steger is among the leaders on offense and all-district pitcher Zac Lyon has rejoined the team after brain surgery during the winter after being diagnosed with Chiari Malformation 1. Beckman should have a better offense and solid defense to make up for lack of pitching depth.
Mount Vernon:
The Mustangs reached the 2A state tournament last season with an impressive run in the postseason. The state tournament experience should benefit them. Tough Wamac competition should prepare them for the postseason. Mount Vernon will be led by strong pitching, including sophomore Luke Eldred, and senior leadership that includes Trey Ryan. Both were all-district and all-conference players last year for the 26-15 Mustangs.
BGM: The Bears had a strong season, coming one win shy of the Class 1A state tournament with a loss to state semifinalist Van Meter. BGM is led by all-state pitcher Zac Freese, who won 14 games, struck out 124 batters and gave up less than a run a game. At least five returners hit better than .300 last season, including Kyle Gritsch and Jack Kline. If they get run support for pitchers, they could win another conference crown.
Lisbon: The Lions have a handful of players returning that garnered all-district honors last season. They are young as well, coming off a disappointing early postseason loss to Easton Valley. Connor Woodward and Ryan Kortemeyer give them a strong 1-2 punch on the mound. They also contribute to a capable offense, featuring Keegan Tritle, Ryan Light and Brock Givens.
