George Grothman, 88, of Marengo, died Thursday, March 19, 2015, at Marengo Memorial Hospital. A memorial service will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday, March 28, at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 307 N. K Ave., Vinton. He was cremated by Iowa Cremation.
George Ernest Grothman was born Jan. 1, 1927, to Louis and Bertha Grothman on the family farm near Round Knob, Ill. He enjoyed farm life with his older sister and younger brother.
At age 12, he devoted his life to helping others come to know Jehovah God and His Word, the Bible. He did this right up until the day before his death.
In 1949, he volunteered the next five years to contributing to the production of Bible literature in New York. While serving there he met Mary Caffarelli. They married on March 27, 1954. They spent their time together teaching others about the Bible. They had one daughter, Rebecca.
He worked at the Iowa Braille and Sight Saving School in Vinton until retirement.
He is survived by one daughter, Becky (Mike) Turner, Marengo; and one niece, Darla (Wendall) Lee of Paducah, Ky.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; his sister-in-law, Sharon; his brother, Lavern; and his sister, Kathryn Grothman.
