CHARLOTTE ANN DUNLAP
Oxford
Charlotte Ann Dunlap, 84, loving spouse of the late Rodrick, died peacefully Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2021.
Private family services will be held. Graveside committal will be later this spring, when it is warmer, at Oak Shade Cemetery in Marion, Iowa. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to UnityPoint Hospice, 290 Blairs Ferry Rd. NE, Cedar Rapids, IA 52402 or condolences sent to PO Box 167, Iowa City, IA 52244.
Charlotte was born Nov. 29, 1936, the daughter of Louis and Maxine (Hughes) Mertka. She was a graduate of Springville (Iowa) High School. On Aug. 10, 1955, Charlotte married Rod Dunlap at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. They celebrated 55 years of marriage.
Charlotte and Rod lived in Linn County prior to moving to the Oxford area. Rod was director of the Johnson County Conservation Board. They lived on the grounds of Kent Park from 1970 to 2001.
Charlotte loved making a home for her family. She enjoyed time spent outdoors camping. Charlotte played cards, especially 500 and pinochle, and was an avid reader of romance novels. Most important were her family and grandchildren.
"Our mother and grandmother was a Queen. When we think of her, it is her smile we see and her laughter we hear. We feel the love she planted deep within each of us. We will remember her by living the rest of our lives smiling. Goodbyes are not forever, they are not the end, we will miss her until we meet again."
Charlotte is survived by three daughters, Brenda Verry of Clear Lake, Sue (Rich) Rugger of Oxford and Kathy McDonald (Murray Cave) of Swisher; her son, Gail (Cyndi) Dunlap of Swisher; eight grandchildren, John Verry, Chelsie (Tom) Frelund, Kelly (Ryan) McLarney, Brooke (Anthony) Walls, Michael Rugger, Tyler Dunlap, Mitchell Dunlap and Chad Eckrich; three great-grandchildren, Logan, Cullen and Hadie Mae Frelund, and one great-grandson in the oven; and four sisters-in-law.
Charlotte was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Rod, in 2010; her son-in-law, Jeff Verry; and siblings, Bud Mertka, Marlene Carpenter and Buzzy Mertka.
