Virginia Means, 89, of Iowa City, died Sunday, Jan. 17, 2016, at Oaknoll Retirement Residence. Memorial services will be held later this spring at First United Methodist Church in Iowa City, with burial to take place at a later date at Oakland Cemetery.
Virginia was a dear soul who in life was always giving of herself, and in death she carried this on by giving of her physical self to science for research and learning to the Department of Anatomy at the University of Iowa. Memorial donations can be given in her memory to Iowa City Hospice, the New Horizons Band or First United Methodist Church. Virginia Campie was born July 31, 1926, in Clinton, Iowa, the daughter of Aksel J. and Camilla (Hall) Campie. She graduated from Clinton High School in 1944 and studied at Mount St. Clare College. She taught business courses at the business college in Clinton and was a piano and organ instructor most of her working life.
Virginia married Arthur Komrofske on Nov. 28, 1945, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Clinton. Two children were born to this union. They divorced in 1971. She married L.L. Budde who later died in 1997. She then moved to Coralville to live near her daughter and husband. On March 10, 2001, she was united in marriage to Duane E. Means. Though she spent most of her faith journey within the Lutheran church, upon her marriage to Duane, she supported and embraced his longtime membership to First United Methodist Church in Iowa City.
She joined the Voices of Experience at the Iowa City Johnson County Senior Center shortly after moving here and also joined the New Horizons Band where she met Duane. She also worked as a volunteer in the chaplain service at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. She was a member of the University Club and several bridge clubs. Quilting was one of her hobbies and she made quilts for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She will be remembered by many for her warm personality, strong faith, positive attitude and great spirit!
Her family includes her daughter and son-in-law, Diane and Jon Eastman of Coralville; three grandchildren; five great-grandsons; and a great-granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by her two husbands and her son, Alan Komrofske.
