Verne served in the U.S. Army from 1959 to 1961, and was stationed in Germany. On Nov. 30, 1963, in Central City, he married Mary Florence Marie Willard. He worked at Wilson Meats/Farmstead Foods meatpacking plant in Cedar Rapids.
