GRACE ELIZABETH WEIGANDT

Grace Elizabeth Weigandt, 92, of Lincoln, Neb., passed away peacefully on Sept. 5, 2018. Grace was born July 25, 1926, to Carl and Hazel (Lundquist) Johnson in Galesburg, Ill. She graduated from Moline High School, Moline, Ill., in 1944. There, she met her husband, Theodore (Ted) Weigandt, during their senior year. The two remained pen pals while Grace attended Moline, Ill., Training School for Nurses and Ted served overseas in World War II. She graduated from nursing school in February 1948 and married her soulmate, Ted, on July 23, 1948. She practiced nursing until her family began to grow and they moved to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in 1957, and later to Lincoln, Neb., in 1980. Her husband of 68 years preceded her in death two years ago.
Grace was passionate about nature, gardening and feeding her backyard birds. She never missed a grandchild's school music concert, she took great joy in her family and making their favorite dinners when they came to visit. Grace was an accomplished seamstress, sewing for her family and home. She loved babies and talked fondly of her years working in the nursery at Moline Public Hospital. She felt honored to have cared for the returning soldiers hospitalized during and after the war. Grace had a very deep faith and love for the Lord, and was a longtime member of Grace Lutheran Church, Lincoln.
Grace will be missed by her children, Cynthia (Paul) Dofton, Huntington Beach, Calif., Judith Nelson, Minneapolis; Constance (Jonathan) Thorson, Lincoln; Theodore (Cindy) Weigandt Jr., Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Todd (Angela) Weigandt, Lee's Summit, Mo.; nine grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; her sister, Ann Mittman, St. Petersburg, Fla.; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; and sister, Joyce Walker, Daytona Beach, Fla.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 6, at Grace Lutheran Church, 2225 Washington St., Lincoln, Neb., followed by a reception. Memorials may be made to Grace Lutheran Church or Shriners Hospitals for Children. Condolences online at www.BMLFH.com.
