Ament, Donald L.
CEDAR RAPIDS - Donald L. Ament, 91, of Cedar Rapids, passed away peacefully at Mercy Hallmar on Friday evening, Oct. 1, 2010, surrounded by his family. Funeral Mass: 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids by the Rev. Ivan Nienhaus. Burial: Mount Calvary Cemetery, with military rites by American Legion Post 727. A vigil service will be held Monday at 5 p.m. at Teahen Funeral Home, where friends may visit from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. and Tuesday from 8:30 a.m. until 9:15 a.m.
Don is survived by his wife, Mary; daughters, Sandra (John) Drew of Anaheim Hills, Calif., Bonnie (Larry) Calvert of Fort Dodge, Donald C. Ament of Cedar Rapids and Nicholas (Elyse) Ament of Central City; 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; sister, Lois Kudrna; sister-in- law, Patricia Ament; brother- and sister-in-law, Wilfred and Darlene Schinker; and many nieces and nephews.
Don was preceded in death by his sisters, Mary Messinger, Dolores Burger, Bea Mintle, Evelyn Naughton and Rosalee Pearson; and brothers, John and Vern Ament.
Don was born in Carroll, Iowa on April 28, 1919, to Leo Jacob Ament and Magdalena (Woestimier) Ament and moved to Cedar Rapids at the age of 10 years. He married Mary Schinker in Norway at St. Michael Catholic Church in 1943. He was a member of St. Patrick Parish for over 70 years. Don served in the Army during World War II as a medical technician while in Germany, England, and France. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus 3rd and 4th Degrees and served as a past Faithful Navigator. He was also a member of Catholic Laymans and the American Legion. He sold Rusco windows for many years and later owned Ament Siding and Window Co.
Don loved fishing, hunting, golfing, traveling, having barbecues and spending time with his family.
Memorials may be directed to St. Patrick Building Fund or to Hospice of Mercy.
