Smith, E. Lucile 'Lu' Peters
E. Lucile “Lu” Peters Smith was born in Grinnell, Iowa, on April 4, 1920, the daughter of Carl Henry and Addie Beeler Peters. She passed away Feb. 12, 2011. Services: 11 a.m. Thursday at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. The Rev. Lloyd Brockmeyer and the Rev. Harlan Gillespie will officiate. Entombment: Cedar Memorial Park Mausoleum. Friends may call at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday.
She was preceded in death by sons Michael, age 11, and Timothy, age 61; her parents; and brothers, Gerald W. and Carl E. Peters.
Lu is survived by two daughters, Lisa (Roger) Jacobson and Joanna (Stuart) Smith-Dromey; one son, Philip (Mary) Smith; Tim's wife, Sue; 10 grandchildren and 10 great- grandchildren.
Lu graduated from Grinnell High School and attended Iowa State College. She moved to Cedar Rapids in 1946. She was active in many school, church and community endeavors before starting her careers. She did commercial design for Keller-Hull, sold real estate for 10 years, sold ladies design ready-to-wear for 15 years at Armstrong's Department Store, with consecutive time of 15 years at Frank Magid Associates as a telephone surveyor, and nine years at Phelan's Boutique after Armstrong's closed. At ages 80 to 88 she was part-time receptionist at Ethan Allen. She also did freelance interior design through her working years.
She was a 60-year member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church. Lu enjoyed theater, symphony, bridge, movies, and traveling. She was fun loving and had a great sense of humor. She had a strong sense of discipline without being demanding and was a decent, honest, caring person who lived her life with dignity and grace. She cherished her friends and family and, in turn, was adored by everyone whose lives she touched.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, 315 18th Ave. Hiawatha, IA 52233.
