Janice B. Mensen, 81, of Dyersville, formerly of Petersburg, died Saturday, April 25, 2015, at home in the Ellen Kennedy Living Center. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Wednes-day, April 29, at Kramer Funeral Home, 750 12th Ave. SW, Dyersville. Friends may continue to call from 9 to 10 a.m. Thursday before funeral services. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 30, at Ss. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Petersburg, with burial in the church cemetery. The Rev. John O'Connor will officiate.
Janice was born Oct. 23, 1933, in Petersburg, the daughter of Hugo and Regina (Deutmeyer) Funke. She married Laverne Mensen on Oct. 8, 1953, in Dyersville. Together they farmed on the Mensen family farm north of Petersburg.
While on the farm, Janice was a homemaker and also cooked at the Petersburg Hall, the Dyersville Senior Center and Ss. Peter & Paul Grade School. In April 1989, they retired and moved into Petersburg, and finally moved to the Ellen Kennedy Living Center in January 2015.
She is survived by her husband, Laverne; six children, Karen (Ron) Hillers of Guttenberg, Kenny (Kathy) Mensen of Cedar Rapids, Ronnie (Deb) Mensen of Earlville, Duane (Celeste Nunemaker) Mensen of Solon, Carla (Dan) Lechtenberg of Manchester and Pat Mensen of Petersburg; 18 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren and another due in May; and seven siblings, Verna Lee Digman, Lois (Art) Kern, Theresa (Charlie) Schindler, Darlene (Wayne) Wegmann, Leon (Karen) Funke and Floyd (Janet) Funke, all of Dyersville, and Rita (Lawrence) Lansing of New Vienna.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Mary Lou Funke and Dorothy and her husband, Leo Mensen; brother-in-law, Edward Digman; and a great-grandson, James Anton.
