Edward "Mick" Fuehrer Jr., 94, died Tuesday, April 10, 2018, at the Vinton Lutheran Home on what would have been his and his wife Marian's 65th wedding anniversary.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 14, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Vinton, with Father Ardel Barta as celebrant. A vigil service will be held at 4:30 p.m. Friday at Phillips Funeral Home Chapel, 212 E. 6th St., Vinton. Visitation will follow from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home and from 10 a.m. until service time at the church on Saturday. A celebration of Mick's life will be held at Mickey's bar in Vinton following the visitation Friday evening.
Mick was born on March 14, 1924, on a farm northwest of Shellsburg, the son of Edward and Mary (Vogt) Fuehrer Sr. He graduated from Shellsburg High School with the class of 1943. On April 10, 1953, he was united in marriage to Marian Eleanor Daily at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Vinton.
Mick and his brother-in-law, Ray Daily, owned and operated the Ron-da-Voo in Vinton for over 20 years. In 1974, Mick built Mickey's bar in Vinton, and operated there until his retirement in 1985. He was the consummate barman and always had his bar rag over his shoulder at the ready. He truly enjoyed visiting with his many customers and friends.
Mick was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. He loved to garden and spend time outdoors. In his later years, he enjoyed his daily six-mile walks around Vinton.
He is survived by his daughters, Paula (Jim) Happel and Amy (Tom) Garwood, all of Vinton; two grandsons, Adam (Annie) Happel and Brian (Stacie) Happel, all of Vinton; three great-grandchildren, Beckett, Kinzlee and Cole Happel; and his brother, Jim (Judy) Fuehrer of Shellsburg.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife, Marian, in 2001; two brothers, Mike and Lyle "Shorty" Fuehrer; and four sisters, Ethel "Tillie" Dake, LaVonne "Bonnie" Bolton, Leone "Peg" Demmel Oyler and Ruth "Betty" Mussman.
The family wishes to thank the staff at the Vinton Lutheran Home for the love and care extended to Mick and to them during his final days.
