Robert W. Phillips died Thursday, Oct. 16, 2014, in his home surrounded by his family. Services will be 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 20, at Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. The Rev. Dan Sanford will officiate at the service. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 19, at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home. Burial will be at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Julia; children, Chad (Dennice) Phillips, Michele (Dave) Ryan and Scott Phillips, all of Cedar Rapids; eight grand-children, Matthew, Melissa, Michael, Molly, Keria, Nick, Mitchell and Devon; 10 great-grand-children; two brothers; a sister; and his beloved dog, Tucker.
He was preceded in death by his parents and six brothers.
Robert was born Aug. 24, 1932, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the son of Maurice Korsmo and Ruth Phillips. Robert served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1951 to 1955. After his service he went to work for Iowa Steel & Iron Works in Cedar Rapids until retiring in 1982. On Nov. 23, 1956, Robert and Julia Zach were united in marriage in Cedar Rapids.
Robert was an avid Hawkeye football fan and enjoyed fishing, golfing and gardening. He was always there to lend a helping hand to his family or friends, but the thing he treasured most was the time he was given to spend with his wife, kids, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend, and will be missed dearly by those closest to him.
The family would like to thank the staff at Hospice of Mercy for their compassion and loving attention given to Robert and his family.
