ALICE HENLINE
Cedar Rapids
Alice Henline, 96, of Altoona, passed away Feb. 16, 2016, after a short illness. A memorial service and celebration of life will be 11 a.m. Friday, June 3, at St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Cedar Rapids.
Alice was born in Macoun, Saskatchewan, Canada, to John Pritchard and Ethel Ann Spurrier Pritchard. The family moved to Boone County, Iowa, in 1924. She graduated from Boone High School in 1936 and later from Buena Vista College in Storm Lake and also from the University of Iowa with a master's degree in education.
She married the Rev. Wendell Henline on Nov. 22, 1939. The Rev. Henline served as a chaplain in the Army during World War II. During the war she and their first son lived in Boone, Iowa, near her parents in Ogden. Following the war, they served churches, mainly in central Iowa.
Alice taught school in the South Tama County Schools until 1970, when they moved to Cedar Rapids, where she taught until retirement. The Rev. Henline preceded her in death in 1985. She later married Phillip E. DeVoe on Sept. 5, 1992, and they were married until his death in 2006.
She is survived by her two sons, Redge Henline and wife Carole of Arlington, Texas, and Tom Henline and wife Marrianne of Pleasant Hill; two granddaughters, Cindy Cook and Anne Henline; two stepgrandchildren, Chris Burkhardt and wife Carrie and Gina Burkhardt; three great-grandchildren; and two step-great- grandchildren.
She loved working with children, reading, knitting and visiting with friends. Her family was especially dear to her.
She was a member of KG Chapter of P.E.O., Theta Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, Ruth Circle of United Methodist Women and Retired School Personnel of ISEA and NEA. She also volunteered many hours at St. Luke's Hospital in a variety of capacities.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Child Protection Center at St. Luke's Hospital.
