Donald Robert "Bob" Sorensen, 85, passed away Monday, Sept. 11, 2017, at Bickford Cottage in Marion. Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 14, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Center Point. Funeral service: 10:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 15, at St. John Lutheran Church, Center Point. Inurnment: Quasqueton Cemetery, Quasqueton.
Bob is survived by his wife, Mardella of Walker; son, Al (Jacqui) Sorensen of Cedar Rapids; daughter, Kim (Deacon Dennis) Ternes of Marion; grandchildren, Kelsey (Sean) Ortgies, Sara Ternes, Chaz Sorensen and Kathleen Sorensen; brothers, Thom (Sharon) Rothfolk and Bill (Jean) Rothfolk; and step-aunt, Maxine Rothfolk.
He was preceded in death by his parents; stepfather, Barney Rothfolk; and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Ray and Eulabelle Spaight.
Bob was born July 14, 1932, in Independence, Iowa, the son of Donald and Nellie (Klotz) Sorensen. He graduated from Walker High School in 1950. On Aug. 4, 1956, he was united in marriage to Mardella Spaight at First Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids. Bob worked at Rockwell Collins in the government systems division as a senior mechanical designer. He was a lifelong resident of Walker, Iowa, and served on the Walker City Council, as well as the zoning committee. Bob was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Center Point, where he had been an elder, Sunday school superintendent and chairman of the congregation. Bob enjoyed cooking, tending to his flower garden and traveling together with Mardella throughout the United States and internationally. He had a great sense of humor and was very witty. Bob's goal was to make everyone laugh and smile.
The Sorensen family extends a special thank-you to the staff at Bickford Cottage in Marion and Hospice of Mercy for the care they provided. Also, thank you to all family and friends who visited Bob in the past 15 months.
