NORTH LIBERTY - On any given work day, you might just find Jason Clark and Josh Karau playing games or reading comics while on the job.
Anywhere else, that might get you fired. But not at Geek City Games and Comics, which Clark and Karau opened nearly three and a half years ago.
The store sells comics, card and board games, toys, sci-fi and pop culture collectibles, and 'geek” apparel.
'Usually people are happy when they come in here,” Clark said. 'I've worked retail for a lot of years, and here people are coming for entertainment. Their favorite comic just came out, or they are looking for a game like Cards Against Humanity or Exploding Kittens to play with friends on game night.”
Clark pointed out that Geek City Games carries a wide variety of board games of varying complexity levels.
'These are not games like Monopoly,” he said.
But Geek City Games does not carry electronic gaming systems and games.
'Pretty much every game we sell requires social interaction, and sometimes reading and math,” Clark added.
'We basically started with one display case of magic cards and maybe 10 games. Now we have some 3,000 titles and there is always new stuff coming out, so our inventory is constantly changing,” Clark said.
'There are just so many new games that have popped up since we started,” he added, noting that moving to their new space in North Liberty this past May allowed Geek City Games and Comics to expand substantially.
The store features rows of tables with plenty of chairs for the various gaming programs it runs on weeknights and weekends, such as such as a Board Game Night, Dungeons and Dragons night, magic night, and X-wing leagues.
'Part of our goal is to connect gamers with each other, introduce them,” he said. 'On Sundays you'll find a lot of kids in here trading their Pokémon cards.”
And if you're not sure which game to buy, Clark and Karau are experts.
'We also have a board game rental program and we teach people how to play the games we sell,” Clark said.
