Just like gluten-free vaping, Fun Facts is one of the hottest fads on both coasts. Now it's caught on in middle America.
Proof was evident Tuesday at Iowa football coach Kirk Ferentz's Tuesday press conference when he discussed Saturday's Pittsburgh-Iowa game.
'Pat was a coach at Rhode Island, we both coached in the Yankee Conference in the ‘90s,” Ferentz said about Pitt Coach Pat Narduzzi and himself. 'There's a little fun fact for you, a little trivia.”
It's not trivia, Kirk. It's a Fun Fact! Ferentz was head coach at Maine and Narduzzi was an assistant at Rhode Island in the 1990s. So that's one. Here are a bunch more:
2. In the past three meetings between Iowa and Pittsburgh, the average margin of victory was three points.
3. Iowa rallied from double-digit deficits to win both of the last two meetings with the Panthers.
4. Pitt has 10 quarterback sacks, Iowa 9. Michigan State and Temple lead the nation with 11.
5. Panthers junior kicker Chris Blewitt was 30-for-39 in field goals over his first two seasons. He is just 2-for-4 this year.
6. Iowa has had two head coaches since 1979. Pitt has had nine. The Hawkeyes are playing the Panthers for the fourth time since 2008, and Pitt had a different coach in each of those games.
7. Though it has had some top-notch players from Pennsylvania (Bob Sanders, Jovon Johnson, Ed Hinkel) under Kirk Ferentz, it has none this year. Pitt has no players from Iowa.
8. Both teams made their most-recent appearance in the Associated Press Top 25 in 2010.
9. Pitt starting linebackers Nicholas Grigsby and Bam Bradley are brothers from Trotwood, Ohio. Bam's full name is George L. Bradley II.
10. Pitt played before 23,245 people last Saturday at Akron. It was the second-largest crowd in InfoCision Stadium history. Pittsburgh is two hours from Akron.
11. Pittsburgh is one of five college teams that plays its home games in an NFL stadium. The others are Miami, San Diego State, South Florida and Temple.
12. Iowa is 7-11 against current members of the Atlantic Coast Conference. Pitt is 106-126-9 against current Big Ten schools. All but Nebraska and Wisconsin have winning records or are .500 against the Panthers. Iowa is 3-3.
13. This is one of five ACC-Big Ten matchups Saturday. The others are Illinois-North Carolina, Northwestern-Duke, Virginia Tech-Purdue and Nebraska-Miami.
14. Pittsburgh is in the ACC Coastal Division with Duke, Georgia Tech, Miami, North Carolina, Virginia and Virginia Tech. Miami is the only one of those seven that is on any sort of coast.
15. Joe Beninati will do the play-by-play for the BTN's telecast of this game. He has been the television play-by-play announcer for the NHL's Washington Capitals since 1994.
16. Pittsburgh has 446 bridges, including the Andy Warhol Bridge.
17. Warhol graduated from Schenley High School in Pittsburgh. Iowa Coach Kirk Ferentz graduated from Upper St. Clair High, about 10 miles south of Pittsburgh. It seems safe to say Warhol and Ferentz didn't run in the same social circles.
