Mar. 1, 2011 2:35 pm
UPDATED: A woman was pronounced dead on scene after police said she jumped from an Interstate 80 overpass and landed on the hood of a semi-tractor trailer this morning.
Emergency crews responded to the eastbound lane of I-80 at mile marker 249 around 8:50 a.m. for a report of a vehicle hitting a pedestrian.
Upon arrival, crews found a woman lying on the hood of the semi. The woman was identified this afternoon as Shannon L. Hierseman of rural Iowa City.
Police confirmed Hierseman came from the overpass of Herbert Hoover Highway. It's believed she jumped intentionally off the bridge into the path of the semi. An autopsy will be performed at University Hospitals and Clinics.
Hierseman was taken from the scene by the Johnson County Medical Examiner.
Police said the driver of the semi, Stanley T. Engstrand, was not injured in the incident, and no other vehicles were involved.
Traffic was not completely blocked off as one lane of I-80 was kept open for traffic.
