Catherine Mary Johnston, 98, died Monday, Sept. 15, 2014, at the English Valley Care Center, North English. She moved to the center in August 2008. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 19, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in North English. Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Powell Funeral Home in North English, with a rosary beginning at 5 p.m. Burial will be in the White Pigeon Cemetery, rural Webster, beside her husband of 48 years.
She is survived by seven children, Berl (Florence) Johnston and Clarene Krumm, both of Keswick, Patricia (Robert) Leer of West Point, Texas, Judith (John) Andrews of Grand Junction, Colo., Monica (Greg) Hoehne of Gastonia, N.C., Paul (Kaleen) Johnston of Manassas, Va., and Marian (Richard) Bethke of rural Webster; 50 grandchildren: 105 great-grandchildren; 34 great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Catherine was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1983; daughter, Marlene Clubb; four brothers, Alfred, Lawrence, Lester and Joe VanDee; six sisters, Clara Bonnater, Inez Neal, Stella Veverka, Gladys Keller, Jessie Seal and Doris Bair; two grandchildren, Tiffany Leer and Zachery Clubb; a great-great-grandson, Emmett Fineran; and sons-in-law, Ray Clubb and Claude Krumm.
Catherine Mary Johnston was born April 23, 1916, near Armah in Iowa County, to Lewis and Mary (Wagner) VanDee. She attended country school and graduated from North English High School in 1934. Catherine married Cloyd Johnston at St. Joseph Catholic Church in North English on June 9, 1934.
Cloyd and Catherine farmed in the White Pigeon area for 40 years, until moving to Keswick in 1974. Catherine was a member of Armah and St. Joseph Church for over 50 years and Our Lady of Lourdes in Keswick for over 30 years. She was an avid reader and made eight quilts for her children and 51 comforters for her grandchildren.
A general memorial fund has been established.
