Friday's high school basketball roundup: Mary Crompton, Ashley Joens set scoring records

Metro girls

2A No. 7 Iowa City Regina 66, Camanche 41

Mary Crompton became the all-time scoring leader for the Regina girls' basketball program in style. The senior sank eight 3-pointers and posted 34 points as egina beat Camanche, 66-41, in Iowa City.

Kennedy Wallace added four 3-pointers and 16 points for Regina (16-4).

Lea Lefebure had 10 points to lead Camanche (15-6).

5A No. 1 Iowa City High 84, Waterloo East 26

Ashley Joens set the single-season Iowa City High scoring record, also with style, scoring 45 to bring her total to 550 (Virginia Johnson had the old record of 519). Joens scored 40 points in the first half alone.

Aubrey Joens added 14 and Rose Nkumu 12 for No. 1 City High (18-0).

Kerris Roberts had 19 points to lead East (5-15).

4A No. 12 Cedar Rapids Xavier 59, 5A No. 11 Cedar Rapids Prairie 54 (OT)

Xavier won a battle between ranked teams, topping Prairie at home

Emily Jasper had 15 points, Maria Steffen had 14 and Libby Arnold 13 for Xavier (11-8).

Sidney McCrea and Mallory McDermott each had 19 points for Prairie (12-6).

4A No. 1 Marion 70, South Tama 38

Top-ranked Marion remained undefeated with a dominant win at South Tama.

Marion (19-0) had 11 3-pointers, led by Mia Laube with four and a team-high 15 points. Riley Wright added 14 points, and Kayba Laube and Chloe Rice each added 12 points.

Linn-Mar 61, Cedar Rapids Jefferson 58 (OT)

The Lions pulled off the upset on their home court in Marion.

Megan Murphy had 18 points, including five 3-pointers, and Macey Miller added 14 points for Linn-Mar (3-16).

Erica Oler had 21 points and Jenna Griffith had 16 points for Jefferson (7-12).

Cedar Valley Christian 65, Easton Valley 63

Cedar Valley Christian hung on in Springville.

CVC (10-11) hit 17 of 26 at the free-throw line. Molly Hembera was 11 of 16 and finished with 25 points. Maggie Cach added 18 points and Elizabeth Fields had 13 points.

5A No. 13 Cedar Rapids Washington 70, Cedar Rapids Kennedy 65

A pair of dagger 3-pointers by Caitlin Riley gave Washington some separation, and the Warriors held off Kennedy, 70-65, in a Mississippi Valley Conference battle at Washington High School.

Riley finished with six 3-pointers and a game-high 21 points as the Warriors (11-6 overall, 7-4 MVC) completed a season sweep between the teams.

The Trojans cut the lead to two before Antonio Turner hit a pair of fouls shots to seal the win. Turner finished with 35 points.

Ryland Threlkeld-Wiegand — who had 11 points overall — had a 3-pointer to break the tie earlier in the fourth quarter for City High (5-12). Keshawn Christian added 23 points, including five 3-pointers.

Treyshawn LaBeaux had 20 points and Tyrese Nickelson added 19 points for Waterloo East (8-9).

Marion 56, South Tama 44

The Indians showed some growth, having lost to South Tama, 49-45, back on Jan. 9.

Trevor Paulsen led Marion (10-9) with 20 points. Jaffer Murphy added 11 points.

Cedar Rapids Jefferson 55, Linn-Mar 54

Jefferson scored a basket in the final minutes to win in Cedar Rapids.

Ozzie Meiborg had 15 points and Kyler Bell added 13 points for Jefferson (8-9).

Trey Hutcheson had 22 points to pace Linn-Mar (8-9).

Kyle Gustafson had 19 points for Cedar Valley Christian (2-16) in Springville.

Two ordinary teams played an extraordinary game. And in the end, the smallest guy on the court stood tallest.

Jackson Foley scored 10 of Cedar Rapids Kennedy's 11 points in extra time, and the Cougars outlasted Cedar Rapids Washington, 66-64, in a double-overtime Mississippi Valley Conference boys' basketball game Friday night at Washington High School.

3A No. 1 Cedar Rapids Xavier 72, Cedar Rapids Prairie 65

No comeback for the ages again.

Cedar Rapids Xavier's boys' basketball team stayed calm, cool and collected, held on to its halftime lead this time and beat Cedar Rapids Prairie, 72-65, Friday night at the Hawks nest.

These teams played an instant classic back a month ago. Well, at least on the Prairie side.
