Dorris M. (Gregor) Ruth, 97, of Burlington, formerly of Shueyville, died Saturday, Jan. 16, 2021, at Bickford Assisted Living in Burlington. Per Dorris' request, she has been cremated, and a celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to Great River Hospice of Burlington or St. Vincent's Cemetery of Riverside. Peterseim Funeral Home is assisting the family.
Dorris Mae (Gregor) Ruth was born March 25, 1923, in Shueyville, Iowa, the daughter of Joseph and Anna (Teslik) Gregor. She graduated from Shueyville High School. On July 25, 1946, she was united in marriage to Robert John Ruth at Immanuel Conception Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids. She worked as a production worker at Collins Radio and in the school lunch programs at Shueyville and College community schools. Dorris was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids, the Altar and Rosary Society and was a 4-H leader. She loved to play the accordion in her younger days and also loved to dance. It was at a dance where she met her husband of 70 years, Robert. Dorris also loved to walk and was a good cook and seamstress. She taught herself to sew and made her own wedding dress, the wedding dresses of both her daughters and bridesmaid dresses for those weddings. She also enjoyed sewing clothes for her children, grandchildren and dolls. Dorris and Robert enjoyed their retirement years in the Rio Grande Valley in Texas.
Survivors include her son, Gregory Ruth of Montrose, Iowa; two daughters, Sandra (Robert) Schroeder of Danville, Iowa, and Barbara (Edward) Modzelesky of Cross Junction, Va.; four grandsons, Christopher (Jennifer) Schroeder, Benjamin Schroeder, Adam (Stephanie) Modzelesky and Tyler Modzelesky; four granddaughters, Rochelle Schroeder, Rebecca (Justin), Angela (Christopher) Dean and Erin (Charles) Driscoll; eight great-grandsons, Cameron, Cole and Cohen Schroeder, Logen and Carson Rashid, Hughes Heinen, Jaxon Driscoll and Beckett Dean; six great-granddaughters, Ella Schroeder, Madelyn Rashid, Haven Heinen, Addison and Ainsley Modzelesky and Joslyn Driscoll; and in-laws, Leo (Shirley) Ruth of Solon, Iowa, Eugene (Doris) Ruth of Riverside, Iowa, Mary Marek of Hills, Iowa, and Janelle Marek of Kalona, Iowa.
Dorris was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Robert, in 2016; daughter-in-law, Cathi Ruth; a brother, Marvin (Mary) Gregor; and in-laws, Rita (Joseph) Jenn, Kathleen Ruth, Marie (Paul) Ruth, Beverly (Donald) Ruth, Phyllis Ruth, Emilie (Richard Ruth) Young, Eleanor (Walter) Droll, Robert Marek and Dale Marek.
