GAZETTE’S FALL FAB FIVE TEAMS

Sep. 22, 2014 4:31 pm
The new weekly feature ranks the top five C.R. and Marion Metro sports program regardless of sport and class.
1. C.R. WASHINGTON FOOTBALL -
The Warriors (4-0) have been impressive so far this season, jumping to second in the latest Gazette/KCRG-TV9/KGYM poll. Washington has been explosive, outscoring opponents by about a 30-point margin. The Warriors haven't allowed a TD in eight quarters, proving to have a stout defense and play-making special teams to complement a big-play offense. Washington went from a top Eastern team to one of the best statewide.
2. C.R. KENNEDY BOYS' GOLF -
The Cougars have a special group of seniors that have been a part of two straight state runner-up teams. Kennedy has a group of golfers who all could be No. 1 players for other programs. In the latest Mississippi Valley Conference Valley Division meet, three Cougars tied for medalist honors and the fourth scorer tied for the next lowest score. The Cougars own a commanding 39-stroke lead into the final divisional round at their home course.
3. C.R. XAVIER FOOTBALL -
Speaking of two straight state runner-up performances, the Saints haven't skipped a beat coming off consecutive trips to the Class 4A title game. The switch to 3A has been a successful one after dropping its opener to West Des Moines Dowling, a rematch of last year's 4A championship. Second-ranked Xavier (3-1) has outscored its three 3A opponents by a combined 117-9, including a 28-0 district win over No. 6 Solon.
4. LINN-MAR BOYS' CROSS COUNTRY -
The Lions are ranked second in Class 4A and are a state title contender. They have four top-10 state finishes since 2010, including third in 2012 and fourth last year. Linn-Mar boasts top-10 ranked runners in brothers, Daniel and Ryan Murphy. Daniel Murphy, a senior, is ranked first according to the Iowa Association of Track Coaches, and Ryan Murphy, a sophomore, is 10th. No. 17 Dalton Gosch and No. 21 Ryan Fogerty add strength.
5. LINN-MAR GIRLS' SWIMMING -
The Lions are off to a fast start this season, posting convincing dual wins outside of a loss to perennial power Cedar Falls. Linn-Mar is the top Metro team in the state Power Rankings. The Lions' depth and balance is shown in their relay performances. They are first in the 400 free relay, second in the 200 free relay and fourth in the 200 medley relay. Jenn Jenks has led the way, ranking among the state individual leaders in the three separate events.
