MOUNT VERNON - Scheduling was not kind to Central City. The Wildcats faced two highly ranked eight-man opponents the first two weeks and had yet to score.
That changed last night.
Central City (1-2) dominated the second half of what had been a back-and-forth battle to rout Cedar Valley Christian (1-2), 58-36 at Cornell College.
'We had a really tough non-district beginning of the season, but we really worked hard to play smart and lessened our mistakes tonight,” said Central City Coach Brian Deal. 'This win is a huge relief.”
The Wildcats ended their two-game scoring drought on the first possession when Gavin Pospisil capped a 53-yard scoring drive with a 26-yard touchdown run.
Cedar Valley Christian answered early in the second quarter when quarterback Kenan Ulmer hooked up with senior Tom Scroggs for a 10-yard TD pass.
Pospisil - who totaled 146 rushing yards, 81 receiving yards and five TDs - responded by catching a 10-yard TD pass from quarterback A.J. Lucas for a 14-8 lead.
The teams exchanged scores until halftime when Central City took a 28-20 lead into the break.
Scroggs got into the scoring action from the defensive side of the ball to begin the second half. The senior intercepted a pass and returned to the end zone to tie it 28.
But the Wildcats outscored the Huskies 30-16 in the second half. Lucas found Klein Walker twice for TD's and scampered in for two more scores on the ground.
