Huskies turn the tables in opening rout

CEDAR RAPIDS – With 27 losses in 28 games over the first four years in program history, Cedar Valley Christian has been on the wrong end of a lot of continuous clocks.
Thursday at LaSalle Middle School, it was the Huskies' turn to deliver a blowout.
Sophomore quarterback Cole Telecky ran for two scores and threw for another in a 36-point first quarter, and Cedar Valley Christian earned its first home-field victory, 65-6, in an 8-player football opener over Harmony.
'I didn't really know what to expect,” said Telecky, who finished with 114 yards passing and 62 on the ground. 'I came out, played as hard as I could. I was ready for anything.”
For a brief instant, the game resembled many of the tough times of past Cedar Valley Christian games. On the first play from scrimmage, Harmony's Austin McCarty took a direct snap and raced 59 yards for a touchdown.
Were the Huskies thinking, 'Here we go again?”
'No, it made me mad,” senior linebacker Colin Heeren said. 'Because I knew we could have done something about it. For me, it encouraged me to just read plays better.”
That they did, as the Huskies' defense shut out the Rockets for the remainder of the game, intercepting four passes and recovering a pair of fumbles. Heeren accounted for one of each, and his 66-yard kickoff return to open the second half gave Cedar Valley Christian a 44-6 lead and got that coveted continuous clock rolling in their favor for the first time.
'I'm very excited that they played very hard and did a good job,” Cedar Valley Christian Coach Ed Betsworth said. 'Our intensity and focus, we didn't quit. We took it to them. We kept going, we weren't going to quit. We knew that we were the better team tonight.”
Last season, Cedar Valley Christian (1-0) earned the first win in program history at Harmony, 30-20. Thursday resembled nothing like that contest, as the Huskies scored 65 unanswered points for the emphatic win.
Tailback Apollo Betsworth ran for 76 yards and two first-quarter scores, while Telecky and Heeren each added touchdown runs in the third quarter.
Sophomore Kyle Gustafson closed the scoring with a 39-yard interception return for a score.
McCarty finished with 91 rushing yards for Harmony (0-1). His brother Clinton McCarty, who caught four passes for 41 yards, was carted off in an ambulance with 7:44 to go in the game. He was reportedly alert and had movement, but was taken to the hospital for tests.
This will be the final season for the Harmony program, whose roster of 15 players will merge with Class A Van Buren next season.
Cedar Valley Christian travels to Clarksville Sept. 4.
