UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS - The City Council has announced its intention to appoint a mayor during a special meeting Monday.
The meeting will be at 7 p.m. in the University Heights City Hall, 1302 Melrose Ave.
Four people have sent in applications and statements. They are council member Dotti Maher, Louise From, Nick Herbold and Erin Sheffield.
Their applications are posted on the city's website, www.university-heights.org.
Council members chose to appoint a mayor rather than hold a special election.
The new mayor will fill a vacancy left last month by Wally Heitman, who had about a year left on his term.
Mayor Pro Tem Jerry Zimmermann has served in Heitman's place since then.
If Maher is appointed mayor, the City Council will have to decide whether to appoint a new council member or hold a special election.
Residents can force a special election by submitting to the city clerk a petition signed by at least 69 University Heights residents within 14 days of the appointment.
The City Council will hold its regular meeting on Tuesday.
