LLOYD PELLING
Iowa City
Lloyd Lawrence Pelling, 89, of Stuart, Fla., formerly of Iowa City, passed away peacefully from natural causes on Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2014.
Lloyd was born Nov. 3, 1924, in Chicago, the son of Ruth and Lloyd Lawrence Pelling Sr. Lloyd earned both a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering (summa cum laude) and a Master of Business Administration degree from Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill. It was at Northwestern that he met his beloved wife, Jillian. Lloyd enlisted in the United States Army in 1943 and served in the Army Corps of Engineers. Lloyd and Jillian were married June 17, 1950, and settled in Chicago, where Lloyd worked for Container Corp. of America.
In 1956, Lloyd and Jillian moved their family to Iowa City, where Lloyd continued developing and expanding the L.L. Pelling Asphalt Paving Co., originally founded in 1948 by his father, Lloyd Pelling Sr. Lloyd served as president of L.L. Pelling Co. Inc. for over 30 years. In the late 1950s, Lloyd and Jillian expanded the business to include the L.L. Pelling Equipment Leasing Corp., which Jillian helped manage until their retirement in 1986.
Lloyd served on the board of the Asphalt Paving Association of Iowa from 1965 to 1971, and served as president in 1970. He also was active in the National Asphalt Paving Association, Association of General Contractors of America and the American Road Builders Association. The L. L. Pelling Co. has been actively involved in numerous charities, a commitment that continues to this day.
Lloyd was a loving husband to his wife, Jillian; and a devoted father to his three daughters. Lloyd and Jillian's home on Bluff-wood Circle was a warm and welcoming gathering place for their friends and their daughters' friends and families.
After retiring to Stuart, Fla., Lloyd and Jillian enjoyed boating, entertaining and traveling the world with family and lifelong friends.
Lloyd will be remembered as a kind and generous man of great integrity, who was well respected by his peers; worked hard, built a great company, and adored his family and friends.
A funeral service will be Saturday, Oct. 18, at Gay & Ciha Funeral Home, 2720 Muscatine Ave., Iowa City. Visitation will be from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. and the memorial service will begin at 2:30 p.m.
Lloyd is survived by his three daughters, Jill Christine (Curtis Starnes) of West Branch, Victoria Gail of Stuart, Fla., and Karen Marie (Craig Levine) of Aurora, Colo. Also surviving are four grandchildren, Daniel Bramer, Jennifer Loflin, Alisha Stokes and Justin Starnes; and six great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to the American Heart Association.
Online condolences may be sent for his family through the Web at www.gayandciha.com.
