Richard J. Koftan, 84, of Cedar Rapids, died Thursday, Aug. 4, 2016, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha. There will be a visitation on Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Richard's funeral service will be private.
Survivors include his wife, Lois; a daughter, Susan (Jim) Phelps of Toddville; a grandson, Jason Phelps of Kewanee, Ill.; a son-in-law, Matt Sindelar of Cedar Rapids; and seven great- grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Roxie; and a daughter, Cynthia.
Richard was born Jan. 30, 1932, in Hagers Grove, Mo., the son of George and Ella Mae Vickers Koftan. He received his bachelor's degree from the University of Missouri in mechanical engineering and his master's degree from the University of Iowa.
He married Roxie Robey on Nov. 21, 1954, in Clarence, Mo. Roxie passed away in 1992. He later married Lois E. Blockhus on July 19, 1997, in Cedar Rapids,
Richard was an engineer at Rockwell for over 32 years, retiring in 1994. He enjoyed gardening, and proudly served in the Army during the Korean War. He also enjoyed traveling and with his job at Rockwell, he was able to travel all over the world.
Richard was a man of logic and science. He was always modest about his accomplishments. He taught his family love and honesty above all else.
Richard will be greatly missed and his memory will be cherished by all who knew and loved him.
Memorial donations may be given to the Cedar Valley Humane Society in Richard's name.
