Not ‘everybody’ is thrilled by roundabout call

In response to 'C.R. scraps roundabout at Cottage Grove Ave” published in The Gazette on Oct. 3: No, Katie Hill, not everyone living near Washington High School is 'thrilled that they're not going to be putting in a roundabout” at the intersection of Cottage Grove Ave. and Forest Drive. I am in favor of a roundabout at that location and many others in Cedar Rapids.
Roundabouts have proved advantages compared to other types of controlled intersections: fewer serious accidents, improved traffic flow and lower gas consumption and air pollution from vehicles while stopped. Experts agree that in many situations roundabouts are the best option. Sadly, many people are still intimidated by them because they don't have much experience using them. The result is a NIMBY (Not In My Backyard) attitude. My hope is that the next time city engineers propose a roundabout at that intersection it will be installed.
