William Lewis Bacher, 92, of Lisbon, Iowa, died Sunday, Jan. 10, 2021, at Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids. Due to the pandemic, services will be held at a later date. Arrangements are with Stewart Baxter Funeral & Memorial Services, Mount Vernon.
Bill was born Jan. 20, 1928, in Burlington, Iowa, the son of William and Marie (Miller) Bacher. He graduated from Burlington High School in 1945, and then went to work for the Burlington-Northern Railroad. Bill served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, from 1950-52. He was a Purple Heart recipient.
After the service, he attended DeVry Institute of Technology in Chicago. On June 16, 1956, he married Doris Depperman in Burlington. They lived in Chicago for the next 11 years before moving to Mount Vernon in 1967. Bill retired in 1991, after a long career as a maintenance electrician at Cherry Burrell. They moved to Lisbon in 1990.
Bill enjoyed home remodeling and was a great fan of Hawkeye basketball. He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Mount Vernon and the Disabled American Veterans.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Doris; son, Bill (Donna) Bacher of Cedar Rapids; daughters, Cheryl (Todd) Roy of Solon, Cathy (Steve) Phillips of Lisbon and Sue (Fred) Hucke of Fairfield; grandchildren, Deb (Mike) Vogel, Denise (Chad) Kilgore, Bill Bacher, Laurie (Michael) Moellers, Coren Hucke, Adam Roy, Loreena Hucke and Sarah Roy; and great-grandchildren, Charisma, Aria, Aurora, Ben and Evie.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Mary Ann Anderson.
Memorials may be directed to the United Methodist Church of Mount Vernon or the Lisbon-Mount Vernon Ambulance Service.
The family extends a special thank you to Mercy Medical Center, Palliative Care and Hospice, especially Kris Sargent, for their gentle care and compassion during Bill's illness.
