Donald C. Nebergall, 87, of Cedar Rapids, died Thursday, March 31, 2016, at the Woodlands at The Meth-Wick Community. There will be a private family service with burial in Blue Grass Cemetery. Teahen Funeral Home is serving the family.
Don is survived by his wife, Shirley; five grandchildren, Nathan Nebergall, Bart and his wife, Elizabeth Nebergall, and Lily Nebergall, all of Tulsa, Okla., Dr. Jamie Bosma-Groh and her husband, Dr. John Groh, of Roswell, Ga., and Bradley Bosma of Chicago; a great- grandson, John Groh Jr.; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Williams of Marion; and four nieces, Deb Oellrich, Diane Wendt, Dorothy Abel and Madelyn (Chris) Venter.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Nancy Bosma; his son, Dr. Robert Nebergall; and his brother, Dr. Roger Nebergall.
Donald Charles Nebergall was born Aug. 12, 1928, in Davenport, the son of Ellis William and Hilda Dorothy Elizabeth Bruhn Nebergall. He was reared on the family farm known as Knoll Crest near Blue Grass. Don attended rural grade school and graduated with the class of 1946 from Davenport High School. In 1951, he graduated from Iowa State College with a Bachelor of Science degree in agricultural economics. He married Shirley Elaine Williams on April 12, 1952, in South Bend, Ind. Don was a World War II Army veteran and served with the Army band during the occupation of Japan under Gen. Douglas McArthur.
Don was involved in the banking industry for more than 50 years, with his first 25 years at Brenton Bank. He first served as vice president and director of Poweshiek County National Bank in Grinnell before moving in 1972 to Cedar Rapids, where he served as the founding president and chairman of the board of Brenton Bank and Trust in Cedar Rapids.
At the time of his death, he was a 25-year member of the board of directors for Guaranty Bank and Trust.
He currently was serving as board of director emeritus of Telephone and Data Systems Inc., which is the parent company of U.S. Cellular, and on the board of Barlow Land Co.
Don was very active in community affairs and had served as a past president of Meth-Wick Manor and Cedar Rapids Greater Downtown Association. He had been a vice chairman for both the Iowa 4-H Foundation and Iowa Transfer System (SHAZAM).
Don was a member of the social fraternity Delta Upsilon and the agricultural honorary societies, Alpha Zeta and Gamma Sigma Delta.
