Mabel was born April 28, 1915, the daughter of Nicholas and Mary Leona (Meyer) Hoffmann, on the farm northeast of Dyersville, Iowa, in Hickory Valley. She began her elementary school education at St. Francis one room country school at Hickory Valley in Dubuque County, located five miles northeast of Dyersville, where she completed first through sixth grades. She then went to town and stayed with her grandfather and completed seventh grade at St. Francis Xavier in Dyersville. Mabel was one of Catholic faith and made her solemn communion and confirmation at St. Francis Xavier in Dyersville.
On Jan. 10, 1940, Mabel was married to John G. Kremer at St. Francis Xavier Basilica, Dyersville, Iowa, by the Rev. Father John Herbers. To this union, nine children were born. Together they farmed the family farm near Worthington from 1940 to 1943. In the spring of 1943, they moved by horse and wagon to a farm west of the red bridge, Central City, Iowa. They farmed with two teams of horses: Beauty, Nellie, Mabel and Dick. In 1950, they purchased the farm near Prairieburg. Mabel was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Prairieburg. She served as past president of the Altar and Rosary Society, taught religion at St. Joseph's, Prairieburg and Immaculate Conception Church at Castle Grove. She was one of the original members of the Hills Mill Homemakers Club. Mabel was an excellent gardener with a “green thumb” to envy. She loved her vegetable garden and flower gardens, sharing many vegetables, plants and bulbs with her friends. In the winter, she enjoyed making quilts for her children and donated many of them to Camp Courageous of Iowa. She was an avid card player at the Senior Center in Central City and Coggon. Winning two quarters was a “big deal.” Mabel loved to travel and visit her children and grandchildren, always sharing her adventures with her friends.
Memorials may be made to Camp Courageous of Iowa, PO Box 418, Monticello, IA 52310-0418 in Mabel's memory.
