Walker, Charles H.
Charles H. Walker, 80, of 912 29th St. NW, Cedar Rapids, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Jan. 8, 2011, at Manor Care surrounded by family. Services: 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Jude Catholic Church by the Rev. Mark Reasoner with military honors by the American Legion Honor Guard. Burial: 2 p.m., St. Mary Cemetery, Williams. A vigil service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday at the Teahen Funeral Home where friends may visit from 2 to 7 p.m. Friday and after 9 a.m. Saturday at the church.
Those left to honor Charles' memory are his wife, Arlene Walker; children, Len Walker of Lake Geneva, Wis., Benita (Gary) Robinson of Carmel, Ind., Steve (Jane) of Dubuque, Kevin Walker of Ankeny, Marie (John) Keenan of St. John, Kan., Dan (Andrea) Walker of Shannon, Ill., Hal Walker of Des Moines, Tom (Mary) Walker of Kansas City, Mo., Pam Walker and Scott (Shelly) Walker of Mankato, Minn.; 23 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; his sister, JoAnn (Rich) Gidel of Georgetown, Texas; and a sister-in-law, Gwendoline Walker of Vernal, Utah.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Ralph and Harold; and grandson, Spenser.
Charles was born on Sept. 19, 1930, in Wilke, the son of Robert and Theresa Holdgrafer Walker. He graduated from Williams High School in 1950. Charles was united in marriage to Arlene M. Greufe at St. Augustine Church in Milo on Oct. 28, 1953, while enlisted in the Navy. He returned from active duty in 1955 and was honorably discharged in 1959.
After he served, they made their home in Dubuque where they raised seven sons and three daughters. He retired after 31 years with IBM, while living in Cedar Rapids. After retiring, he enjoyed his grandchildren, fishing, traveling, sporting events and volunteering his time for meals on wheels. Charles and Arlene enjoyed each other's company for 57 years.
The family would like to give special thanks to Hospice Compassus for their compassionate care and support.
