Iowa Coach Todd Lickliter reacts to derogatory video of his son
Feb. 5, 2010 3:36 pm
Iowa Coach Todd Lickliter responded to a satirical video that appeared on a Des Moines television station that was less than flattering of his son, John.
Iowa Athletics Director Gary Barta demanded an apology from the station, which declined to offer one, according to reports on Gazette Communications' platforms. Todd Lickliter said the experience might help strengthen John, a red-shirt walk-on guard, in the future.
Here's what he said:
"I appreciate Gary. I don't think it was just my son. I think Gary was saying that student-athletes, they probably shouldn't be ... scrutinized the same way as probably coaches, adults. But I haven't looked at it, I don't really have time to critique those sort of things. I'm busy but I've heard about it, obviously.
"But I think in the long run, none of us wish this sort of thing for any of our players or children or anything, but I know John well enough, he's 20 years old, he's got a lifetime ahead of him. In some regards, these sort of things will be something for him to draw upon and although you don't wish it for him, he'll able to grow through it. He'll be able to make objective decisions in his life. I'm hoping he'll choose empathy and support and things that will be, that he'll have a lot of satisfaction as he goes through his life.
"You don't wish it upon people, you hope that it helps them to grow and I think for John, it will."
"I know people say it's the landscape. I don't know that it has to be the landscape; it just happens to be what people that are associated with the profession choose to do. And if somebody chooses to do it, then what am I going to do? I can't control it. At that point you've just got to remain objective and continue to do what you think is right, support John and support the other players and be thankful for what you do have ... for the choices that I have to make. I've got choices I have to make make in my life, and I've got to do that in a way of objectivity and through evaluation and I have to live through those things as everybody has to live with their choices. I can't control somebody else's, I just can control mine."
