Iowa high school football rankings: No major changes in Gazette/KGYM poll

Status quo rules in this week's Gazette/KGYM state football rankings. In all six classes, the top four teams remain in the same order.

West Des Moines Dowling stays atop the Class 4A poll after scorching Sioux City West, 77-7, Friday night. The Maroons have won the last four big-school state championships.

Iowa City West stayed at No. 2 after handling previously unbeaten Cedar Rapids Prairie, 48-28. West Des Moines Valley and Bettendorf stay at third and fourth, with Johnston and Waukee sharing the No. 5 spot.

In Class 3A, Cedar Rapids Xavier maintains a slim lead on Dallas Center-Grimes for the top slot. The Saints downed Decorah, 21-13, while DCG popped Perry, 42-7. Solon stays at No. 3, then it's Pella and Sergeant Bluff-Luton.

Williamsburg is still the top team in 2A after outgunning Mediapolis, 55-31. Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley is No. 2, followed by Mount Vernon, Cascade and Monroe PCM.

West Lyon edged Van Meter by a 55-54 point count for top billing in 1A. West Lyon handled Alta-Aurelia last week, 45-6, and Van Meter blanked Eagle Grove, 37-0. Iowa City Regina is third, then it's Pella Christian and Pleasantville.

It's tight at the top in Class A, too, with Council Bluffs St. Albert holding a 56-55 edge on two-time defending champion Gladbrook-Reinbeck. St. Albert whipped Earlham last week, 46-7, while G-R took care of BGM, 38-13. West Sioux is third, Lynnville-Sully fourth. Hudson and Algona Garrigan are tied for fifth.

Don Bosco remains the leader in 8-Player after accepting a forfeit from Elkader Central. Audubon is second, Remsen St. Mary's third. St. Mary's won a 3-vs.-4 showdown over Newell-Fonda last week; the Mustangs did not drop in the rankings. Harris-Lake Park is fifth.
