Bicyclists must obey rules of the road, too

Early in the morning on May 18, I was driving on Eighth Avenue, approaching the Third Street stoplight. The light was green and my car was the only one in the area. Two bicyclists ran the red light right in front of me. The second one did hesitate a moment, saw that I'd slowed down and went ahead and ran the light. If the driver of my car had been a person who texts or talks on her phone while driving in light traffic, the first bicyclist easily could have been injured.
Most of the information on the news about bicycles revolves around the need for cars to watch for and avoid injuring someone riding a bike. I agree that drivers need to be very aware of their surroundings, especially in the summer with the number of bikes in the area. However, bicyclists also have an obligation to obey the traffic laws and be aware of their surroundings. Let's try to all be safe together.
