Susan L. Benson, 82, of Cedar Rapids, passed away peacefully Sept. 5, 2016, at Cottage Grove Place. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 23, at First Lutheran Church on Third Avenue and 10th Street SE. A luncheon will follow the service.
Susan was born Nov. 21, 1933, to Louis and Johanna Chipokas in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She graduated from Stephen's College and the University of Iowa. Susan was united in marriage to Dr. Walter A. Benson on May 1, 1954, in Ottumwa.
She is survived by her three loving grandchildren, Brendan Gail, Joanna Gail and Gunnar Emery; her brother, James (Ruth) Chipokas; nephews, Scott and Mark Chipokas; and niece, Joanna (Alex) Ringsby.
Susan was preceded in death by her loving husband of 58 years, Walter; her daughter, Kathryn Benson Emery; son-in-law, Josh Emery; parents, Louis and Johanna; brother, Dean Chipokas; and sister, Kathryn Chipokas.
Her family will remember her as a loving mother and grandmother with a wonderful sense of humor, a brilliant mind, an unparalleled commitment to generosity and unmatched culinary talents.
