A Cedar Rapids man went to jail on New Year's Day after he left the scene of an accident that injured four people, police said.
Dakota J. Gatewood, 32, of 342 30th St. Dr. SE, faces multiple charges after the three-vehicle accident at the corner of Eighth Avenue and Fifth Street SE in Cedar Rapids.
According to police, Gatewood was southbound on Fifth Street SE at a high rate of speed around 12:40 a.m. Saturday when his car ran a stop sign and hit two vehicles on Eighth Avenue SE. Gatewood's car first collided a van driven by Kathleen Rudolph, 45, of Cedar Rapids, and then struck a car driven by Ryan Horn, 25, of Marion.
Witnesses told police that Gatewood and a female passenger both got out of the car and walked away.
Emergency responders extricated passenger Greig Madlom, 51, of Stillwater, Okla., from the van and took him Mercy Medical Center with non-life threatening head injuries, police said. Rudolph and Horn also went to Mercy for minor injuries, police said.
Police found the passenger in Gatewood's car, Kellie Hoffman, 27, of Cedar Rapids, walking nearby and arrested her for public intoxication. Sgt. Cristy Hamblin said Hoffman did not complain of any injuries until she arrived at the Linn County Jail, where authorities learned she had broken her foot in the accident.
Officers arrested Gatewood at his residence around 9 p.m. Saturday, after he was identified by witnesses. He was charged with driving while barred, failure to stop, and leaving the scene of an injury accident.
All three drivers in the crash were charged with failure to have insurance. Horn was also charged with driving while barred and taken to the Linn County Jail after his hospital visit.
