Monticello’s Manternachs go 1-2 in 800, Matt wins 4 state titles
May. 21, 2016 9:12 pm
DES MOINES — Monticello's Matt Manternach heard the familiar voice of Iowa's state track meet announcer Mike Jay with 200 meters to go.
The name Jay was announcing wasn't Matt's though. That particular moment had Jay's eyes and voice recognizing Matt's twin brother, Derek.
'I could hear Mike Jay at one time saying that Derek was on the move so that just encouraged me to go faster,' Matt said.
Matt never looked back for his brother, but Derek drew closer and after Matt had crossed the finish line to secure a win in the Class 2A boys 800 meters, Derek surged forward to claim second. He was as low as fifth place with 200 meters to go.
'I could tell I was getting tired, but I still had enough left to where I wanted to save it so I'd have enough at the whole end to finish it,' Derek said.
After winning the 3,200 relay and 1,600 medley in the first two days, Matt and Derek realized their dream of going 1-2 in the 800 as individuals. Matt won in 1:52.77 while Derek crossed in 1:54.22. The top five finishers all crossed the line in less than 1:56.
'I was thinking (Friday) night that I thought it would be really cool if I could finish second behind Matt,' Derek said. 'So ever since last night that's all I've been focusing on is that second-place spot.'
After sharing in that moment with Derek, Matt returned later in the day for the 1,600 meters and won in 4:21.36, edging out C.J. May of Aplington-Parkersburg by .12 seconds. He was one of only five boys in all classes to win four events.
'It's just a dream come true,' Matt said. 'Since (the Drake Relays), I've had my mind set for this meet and four gold medals. I just worked so hard in practices pushing myself and it paid off when I got done here.'
West Branch's Hunter Wargo claimed the state title in the 110 hurdles (14.89) after helping the Bears to a second-place finish in the shuttle hurdle relay (57.44). He outlasted the defending champion Jacob Smith of West Burlington/Notre Dame, who was third in 14.75.
'Last year when I was running against him he beat me pretty good,' Wargo said. 'I just tried to make sure that I didn't lose to this guy again.'
