Roland L. Hiemstra, 86, of Cedar Rapids, passed away Tuesday, May 16, 2017, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha, surrounded by his loving family. A visitation will be on Friday, May 19, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home. Funeral services will be on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories, with Certified Celebrant Julie Freese. Burial with military rites will be at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.
Roland Lavern Hiemstra was born June 23, 1930, to Henry and Hazel Russell Hiemstra in Mahaska County, Iowa. Roland proudly served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean conflict. He was united in marriage to Patty Lou De Selm on June 14, 1953, in Oskaloosa, Iowa. He owned and operated, with his son, a farm for many years.
Roland enjoyed collecting rocks and buckeyes. Roland gave buckeyes to everyone he met because he told them they would bring good luck.
He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, and will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his wife, Patty Lou; children, Renee Hiemstra (Mike Murdock) and Rocky (Julie) Hiemstra, both of Cedar Rapids; sister, Darlene Strasser of Oskaloosa; 10 grandchildren, Blaine, Dallas and Leah Hiemstra, Ashley, Blake and Cole Murdock, Nichole Schappert, Ryan, Brad and Tracy Hiemstra; and five great-grandchildren, Kingston, Skyler, Grace Lynn, Wesley and Declan.
Roland was preceded in death by his parents; son, Craig Hiemstra; daughter, Roxanne Schappert; and siblings, Jasper, Clifford, Virginia and Alveta.
Memorial donations may be directed to Hospice of Mercy.
