Velma Lee Hickey of Hiawatha went to be with the Lord on July 16, 2016, at the Hiawatha Care Center at age 100.
Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. July 21 at Calvary Baptist Church, 5338 Johnson Ave. SW, Cedar Rapids. Memorial services will be 2:30 p.m. July 21 at the church, by Pastor Jay Jentink (319-396-3233). Private entombment will follow at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home, Cedar Rapids.
Velma was born Nov. 10, 1915, to John and Euphama Connelly in O'Kean, Ark. Her mother died when she was 2 and her father died when she was 3. Velma was adopted at age 4 by loving parents, Elijah and Henrietta Wallace of Alma, Ark. She graduated from Kibler High School in 1933 and married Carl Hickey in 1934. Over the years she lived in Atlanta, Ga., and Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and retired in Eureka Springs, Ark., before finally moving back to Cedar Rapids as her health faded.
Velma worked many years at both Rich's Department store (later Macy's), Atlanta, and Armstrong's Department store, Cedar Rapids.
She was a member of the American Business Women's Association, Belles and Bows Square Dance Club, Order of Eastern Star and a faithful member of Westside Church of Christ, Eureka Springs. Later, she worshiped at Calvary Baptist, Cedar Rapids.
She is survived by her children, Wayne Hickey and Peg Moore; grandchildren, Duane (Lynn) Moore, Melody (Bill) Lang and Christopher (Judy) Hickey; great-grandchildren, Colby (Cathleen) Lang, Luke Moore, Emily Lang and Jaclyn Hickey; stepgreat-grandchildren, Joe Rippe and Jamy Rippe; and one great-great- granddaughter, Avalyn Lang.
She was preceded in death by her birth and adoptive parents; her husband, Carl; brother, Earl; and son-in-law, David Moore.
Velma was a caring and loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend, who will live on in the memories of those fortunate enough to know her.
We love and miss you greatly. A more gentle and kind soul has never walked this earth. God has claimed you now. Godspeed.
